Understanding Ovulation

What is ovulation? How do I know when I will be ovulating? Why is ovulation needed in order to become pregnant? If you are trying to become pregnant for the first time, or you are learning about the female reproductive system for the first time, these may be some of the questions that you may have. You may be embarrassed to speak with your physician or close friends about the subject, but the following information will provide you with the answers you need in order to learn more about this natural female reproductive process.

What Is Ovulation?

Ovulation occurs when the ovum or egg is released by the ovaries. A woman may say that she is fertile during a certain time of the month. This simply means that her body is ovulating and the fertile cycle typically begins two to three days in advance.

At the onset of puberty, the ovaries house over 300,000 eggs. Despite the abundance of eggs, the average woman only loses around 300 eggs due to ovulation over the course of her childbearing years.

During the menstrual cycle all of the reproductive hormones work together in order to stimulate ovaries. Oocytes, or immature eggs, begin to respond to the hormonal stimulation. Although many think that these oocytes develop during the timeline of one month, they actually take several months to develop. Some oocytes mature, while others stop growing or become dormant.

Another common myth is that the ovaries take turns releasing eggs. However, only the ovary with the most mature eggs will release eggs during ovulation. This means that some women may only ovulate from one ovary.

Ovulation And Pregnancy

When it comes to theory, it takes one sperm cell and one ovum in order for conception to take place. Although semen can live in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days an ovum usually only lives 24 hours. This means that it must be fertilized within 12 hours after ovulation has occurred. To increase the chances of a successful conception, sex must occur before ovulation.

When Does A Woman Ovulate?

Ovulation varies from one woman to another. Even women who have a regular 28 day menstrual cycle may not ovulate on the 14th day. However, there are signs that a woman may notice that indicates that ovulation is about to occur. These signs include:

• Softening of cervix
• Pain during ovulation
• Increase in basal body temperature
• Increase in sexual desire
• Tenderness in breast

What Should You Do If You Are Not Ovulating?

If you do not experience symptoms of ovulation during your menstrual cycle, or if your periods are not regular, your ovaries may not be releasing eggs every month.

You may have a health condition known as an ovulation. This occurs when a woman does not ovulate. This is one of the most common reasons for infertility. No menstrual periods and/or very long or very short periods are also signs of an ovulation.

Ovulation is a very important first step in the journey to conception. If you are having troubles determining your fertile periods or if you do not have signs of ovulation, consider consulting with your doctor.
